One of the most essential improvements to Live 11 for many producers is going to be the new MIDI scale functionality. It now shows both the average and current amount of CPU being used, and clicking on the meter gives a shortcut to the Audio Preferences panel. Similarly, the CPU meter that you’re used to in Live’s top-right corner has been improved. Located at the bottom of each track (including busses and the master) in Session View, these small horizontal meters mean that you can see exactly which track and plugin chain is causing your computer to freeze up. Sometimes, it’s the small things that really make a difference and one such game-changer for many is going to be the introduction of CPU meters on individual tracks in Live 11. Grooves can now be viewed in the main browser window, and they are now all grouped together as opposed to by source, which helps in finding the appropriate groove for your track. This menu also lets you change the time signature and tempo.Live 11 has added the option to ‘Save Live Set as Template’ straight to the File menu as well (it was previously buried in the Preferences panel). You can change this from the Quantization menu on the top-left settings bar. This makes music sound better and keeps it in time. If you start a clip in the middle of a bar, Ableton will wait until the start of the bar before playing that clip. This is where a knowledge of basic music theory will be useful to you. The new clip won't start immediately however - it will start after a period of time (usually one bar). The currently playing clip stops, and the new clip starts. Once you have more than one clip, try playing another one - what do you notice? There are several things that happen once you trigger a new clip in the same track. Go ahead and drag some more clips onto the track. If you want to stop or start sound, press the spacebar. Use the Pan Knob to adjust the pan of the track, or adjust the volume using the Track Volume Slider to the right of the output levels. When disabled, no sound will come out of the track, but it will keep playing - think of this like a mute button. The Track Activator will enable or disable the track. To hear a preview, select Click to Preview from the bottom of the browser.ĭown in the mixer section, try playing around with the various controls. Clips are usually longer samples, but most of them won't preview when you click them. If you want something a bit more complex, select Clips from the Categories submenu. Most of these will be short sounds of people or instruments. You can use the cursor or the arrow keys to select a sample, and doing so will play a preview of it. Use the right side of the browser to search for some sounds you like - Ableton comes with lots of samples, and each version (Intro, Standard, and Suite) comes with a different selection. Open the Browser from the left hand side - it's time to find some sounds! Underneath Categories, select Samples. If you only have one track, you won't be able to delete it. You can delete tracks by right-clicking on the track title bar and selecting Delete, or by left-clicking the title bar and using your delete or backspace key. Go ahead and delete the two MIDI tracks and one audio track so you are left with one track. The default values are sufficient for now. Here you can enable or disable the track, adjust settings such as pan or gain, and route audio from or to nearly any other place. Underneath the clip slot is a mini control panel for each track. Each clip slot can contain one clip (a piece of or a whole song/sound). You can right-click here to change the name and color of the track. The top of the track is known as the Track Title Bar. Don't worry about these for now.Įach track has the same basic structure. These provide a route for processing audio and returning it back. These can play and record sounds from other devices (such as a microphone or other device), but they cannot generate any sounds on their own.įinally, there are Return Tracks. MIDI devices and tracks are covered comprehensively later on, but for now, think of them as a way of generating a sound, like a keyboard or guitar.Īudio tracks are the opposite of MIDI tracks. MIDI tracks can only accept MIDI instruments, and cannot play samples themselves. Before you can make any music, you need to understand the difference between tracks. That said, if you’re looking for a quick way to play (without having to spend the time calculating points), then this is the online game for you! The AI for the computer players also aren’t the best, and you’ll notice that the computer players have a tendency to play all their “meeples” as early as possible and spend the rest of the game drawing and placing tiles. These major changes were initially unavailable for end-users unless they privately installed and compiled the WebKit source code or ran one of the nightly automated builds available at OpenDarwin. Apple touted this version as it was capable of running a 1.8x speed boost compared to version 1.2.4 but it did not yet feature the Acid2 bug fixes. I just don't find that helpful I prefer to watch movies or music videos. Because I'm writing a new record at the moment, I'm not listening to too much new music. I have my five artists that I've been listening to for, like, the last three months, and that's it. Have you discovered anything good while touring the States? That wasn't really in my brain when I was writing it, but I love Soft Cell, so yeah, I'll take that." It's not a sample, but there's a little bit of a Tainted Love vibe in the song Black Roses. I was sampling Drake and a lot of stuff, just being sort of in that zone." This was when I was making a lot of mixtapes with samples from movies like Kill Bill and Cruel Intentions. I just warmed to it straight away it sounded so luscious and ethereal. "I was talking with this producer, Paul White, and he sent me a load of beats, and one of them was So Far Away with that sample on it. Who could have predicted you would use a Todd Rundgren sample in So Far Away. That's such an amazing original track, so I decided that I wanted to go it and take it my own way." Musically, it's a Gold Panda sample, from the song You. By the end of it, when it's finally over, it's not a surprise you're over it 'cause you knew it was gonna happen. It's one of those things where you know you got into a bad relationship at the very beginning, but you just kind of roll with it. "Yeah, it's exactly that - it's a breakup song. The song You (Ha Ha Ha) is a real kiss-off to somebody. At the time, I was listening to a lot of dark pop, so I was inspired by a lot of the deep bass sounds. We wanted to do something very industrial and hard. I was working with Patrik Berger on that track - we actually wrote that on the same day I wrote I Love It. It reminds of Siouxsie And The Banshees' Kiss Them For Me. The song You're The One has a massive bass synth hook. But then there's '80s pop, things like Martika, T'Pau, stuff like that. Making the record, my main inspiration was a lot of French electro. But that's when I was younger, when I was so in awe of everything. I was also into Shampoo and stuff like that. When I was younger, I was really into Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera - the greats. "I don't know if I draw from anybody from that time. Are there any artists from that era that you consciously draw from? There's a strong element of '90s pop in your music. That's what the record is about: those moments when you're in agony and along, and those times when you're in absolute ecstasy." But then you have those other moments when you're walking on a cloud, so that's the trade-off. After writing it and listening to the songs, I've come to the realization that you really can't have a romance that's true without having all the other awful moments, where you cry and you're thrashing about. The reason why I called the album True Romance is because all of the songs deal with romance and my experiences with love. "I do love that movie, but actually, I didn't directly name the record after it. The movie must have made a big impression on you. You titled the album True Romance, and you used excerpts from that film on Super Ultra. "I just don't find that helpful." © Rahav Segev/ZUMA Press/Corbis "I'm not listening to too much new music," says Charli XCX. If the record sounds like that, that's fine." So it is a messy record, but that's what life is all about, right? Especially during those years, things are messy. I wrote it when I was growing up, mainly during the years of 16, 17, 18. To me, it's a coming-of-age record for teenagers. It's very messy pop, with lots of wild sounds and songs that don't do what they're supposed to. One of the things I like about the record is how it's not slick. All the best songs are written in half an hour. I think the faster a song is written, the better it will be. I don't like to spend a lot of time on anything. My only rule for writing is, it has to be fast. I do like to write at night, so that's one thing I can say. I feel like my writing process is a bit of a mess - I don't have a place, I don't have a time. "Some people are very structured in how they write, but that's just not me. I know that I've walked down the street and thought about a song, and that's when I'll have to record something right there onto my phone. Other times it'll be a complete collaboration with a producer. I might sit down and play keyboards until something comes to me. Sometimes I'll get sent beats and I'll work on something. "I don't really have any kind of method for writing. Painted jar of the Majiayao culture, Late Neolithic period (3300–2200 BC) Important specific types of pottery, many coming from more than one period, are dealt with individually in sections lower down. This was something of a compromise between the other types, and offered locations in the firing chamber with a range of firing conditions. In the late Ming, the egg-shaped kiln ( zhenyao) was developed at Jingdezhen, but mainly used there. Both could reliably produce the temperatures of up to 1,300 ☌ (2,370 ☏) or more needed for porcelain. These are the dragon kiln of hilly southern China, usually fuelled by wood, long and thin and running up a slope, and the horseshoe-shaped mantou kiln of the north Chinese plains, smaller and more compact. Two main types of kiln were developed by about 200 AD and remained in use until modern times. These were updraft kilns, often built below ground. The Chinese developed effective kilns capable of firing at around 1,000 ☌ (1,830 ☏) before 2000 BC. Kiln technology has always been a key factor in the development of Chinese pottery. Claims have been made for the late Eastern Han dynasty (100–200 AD), the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 AD), the Six Dynasties period (220–589 AD), and the Tang dynasty (618–906 AD). This in turn has led to confusion about when the first Chinese porcelain was made. In the context of Chinese ceramics, the term porcelain lacks a universally accepted definition (see above). Porcelain stone – decomposed micaceous or feldspar rocks, historically also known as petunse.Ī black pottery cooking cauldron from the Hemudu culture (c.Kaolin – essential ingredient composed largely of the clay mineral kaolinite.Materials Ĭhinese porcelain is mainly made by a combination of the following materials: The northern materials are often very suitable for stoneware, while in the south there are also areas highly suitable for porcelain. Southern materials have high silica, low alumina and high potassium oxide, the reverse of northern materials in each case. The kiln types were also different, and in the north the fuel was usually coal, as opposed to wood in the south, which often affects the wares. Ware-types can be from very widespread kiln-sites in either north or south China, but the two can nearly always be distinguished, and influences across this divide may affect shape and decoration, but will be based on very different clay bodies, with fundamental effects. The contrasting geology of the north and south led to differences in the raw materials available for making ceramics in particular the north lacks petunse or "porcelain stone", needed for porcelain on the strict definition. China comprises two separate and geologically different land masses, brought together by continental drift and forming a junction that lies between the Yellow and Yangtze rivers, sometimes known as the Nanshan- Qinling divide. Ĭhinese pottery can also be classified as being either northern or southern. The Erya defined porcelain ( cí) as "fine, compact pottery ( táo)". Terms such as " porcellaneous" or "near-porcelain" may be used for stonewares with porcelain-like characteristics. The Chinese tradition recognizes two primary categories of ceramics: high-fired ( cí 瓷) and low-fired ( táo 陶), so doing without stoneware, which in Chinese tradition is mostly grouped with (and translated as) porcelain. Porcelain, on a Western definition, is "a collective term comprising all ceramic ware that is white and translucent, no matter what ingredients are used to make it or to what use it is put". Stoneware, fired at higher temperatures, and naturally impervious to water, was developed very early and continued to be used for fine pottery in many areas at most periods the tea bowls in Jian ware and Jizhou ware made during the Song dynasty are examples. The earliest Chinese pottery was earthenware, which continued in production for utilitarian uses throughout Chinese history, but was increasingly less used for fine wares.
